Case Study : Arkessa works with System Integrator and takes coach company into mobile video

To comply with regulatory and safety requirements, transport companies are turning increasingly to technology to monitor and record activity on their vehicles. This gives them reliable evidence in the event of an incident as well as other useful information that could be of commercial value to the business. But while growing numbers of vehicles have CCTV installed, few have the capability to deliver real-time information to a control room in the case of an incident.

A leading transport company wanted to improve security by installing such a live video system on its fleet of coaches and buses. Wanting to view live information at head office the firm appointed a systems integrator(SI) to make it happen. The SI asked Arkessa to devise a secure 3G wireless network solution and get the innovative mobile video monitoring solution on the road.

Arkessa’s challenge was to establish a mobile network that could deliver robust, live, high quality and uninterrupted coverage across all its routes directly to the firm’s head office.

The fleet was fitted with an IP-based CCTV system comprising cameras and a digital video recorder. Arkessa selected and configured a 3G router to enable the transmission of video for monitoring and archiving.

As Arkessa works with all the UK mobile networks, it was able to draw on its independent expertise and specify a solution tailored precisely to give the best coverage for each bus route. As part of a package of recommendations, it advised that coverage could be improved by selecting a router that was able to use two SIM cards on different networks, and to switch between them automatically depending on which had best coverage at the time.

To address any security issues or concerns about reliability, Arkessa’s technical team developed a working demonstrator to show how the network would perform in practice.

By using private connections with mobile networks on the vehicle side and a VPN via the internet, the transport company can receive video from its fleet, both for viewing in real time and for archiving. The company has absolute confidence that it can access information about live events on its vehicles and collect reliable historic records.
