Each of your remote devices will have a fixed, public or private, IP address, giving each device a unique identity. Having such an identity means each device can receive as well as transmit data, enabling you to control it, update and repair it remotely. Without a unique identity this isn’t possible. 

In new devices, manufacturers can set up wireless connections in advance, enabling them to be activated remotely and connected to the internet as soon as a customer takes delivery.  New services can be created to take advantage of this, including managed software updates, and timed deliveries of consumables, for example.
